Background
A Dalit leader, Mallikarjun M Hkarge started his political career as a student leader in Gulbarga in Karnataka. He is BA and LLB and practiced law before entering politics. He has held the record of winning continuously from Gurmitkal assembly constituency in Gulbarga district from 1972 to 2004. In 2008, he had to change his constituency to Chitapur as Gurmitkal was dereserved under delimitation. A CM-in waiting whenever a Congress government has been formed in Karnataka, he was dejected when the party lost badly in the 2008 elections. He has kept himself clear of political controversies.
