Ghulam Nabi Azad

Background

Known as the 'crisis manager' of the party for his organisational skills, Azad was the Parliamentary Affairs Minister in Manmohan Singh Cabinet until October 27, 2005. Previously, he held other portfolios like Law, Justice & Company Affairs Ministry, and Civil Aviation ministries. He led Congress successfully in the 2002 Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir. He has been the AICC general secretary for a record nine times and member of the powerful Congress Working Committee for 18 years. In 1980, he was appointed as the President of the All India Youth Congress, the first from the minority community. He was also the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir for sometime until he resigned following the Amarnath land controversy.
